G418 is an aminoglycoside related to Gentamicin and is toxic to bacteria, yeast, higher plants, mammalian cells, protozoans and helminths. It blocks polypeptide synthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and is useful for selection of genetically engineered eukarytoic cells in culture.
